Coastal Northwest Black Bear Hunting

Hunting Coastal Black Bear in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington
with Guide Dean Johnstone and with Robert Thomas.

Coastal Northwest Black Bear Hunting, specializes in different baiting techniques within the boundaries of the Quinault Indian Reservation located on the Olympic Peninsula.

The Quinault Indian Reservation has never before been open to non-tribal Coastal Black Bear hunting since the Treaty of Quinault River of 1855. Average annual harvests of Northwest Coastal Black Bear by tribal hunters is about 10-15 allowing Coastal Black Bear populations to reach near carrying capacity.

Due to the current lack of intense hunting by the people of the Quinault Indian Nation and favorable habitat conditions, Northwest Coastal Black Bear populations on the Quinault Indian Reservation are comparable to those found in Southeast Alaska and British Columbia.

Chitwhin, the name for Coastal Black Bear in the Quinault language, can reach heights of 6'+ and weigh in over 400lbs. The Chitwhin reaches this size by feasting on the abundant fruits and berries of the Pacific Northwest such as salmon berries, evergreen huckleberries, salal, crabapple, cascara, and wild blackberries.

We offer hunting over bait out of tree stands or ground blinds. What you choose to hunt them with is up to you.

Salmon and Steelhead return in abundant numbers on the Quinault and Queets Rivers also located within the boundaries of the Quinault Indian Reservation. Check out our sister site Private Water Adventures for trip information and rates. All fall bear hunts include salmon fishing when river conditions permit.

There are still plenty of monster bears roaming the Quinault, the tough part is fooling them! Dean Johnstone and Robert Thomas worked hard, running multiple baits deep into the forest of the land. Their efforts and persistence paid off with this big bear. I can't wait to go back and hunt big bears with Dean and Robert!
